Orgain in Practice:An Interview with an Expert Dietitian in Nutrition and Digestive Health, Nancee Jaffe, MS, RD

Q: Please tell us a little bit about yourself personally and professionally so that our readers will be able to “get to know you”.
A: My name is Nancee Jaffe and I became a digestive health dietitian because I have a digestive issue myself, celiac disease. I was diagnosed about 11 years ago and within 6 months of my diagnosis, I was studying to become a digestive health expert dietitian.
Before becoming a dietitian, I was a director in an art gallery – big change from arts to sciences! I am a native Angelino but have lived in Oregon as well as Spain and Ecuador before returning back to Los Angeles.

Q: How long have you been an RD? Do you have any additional certifications, specializations, awards or publications you’d like to tell us about?
A: I have been a registered dietitian for 6 years. I run the Nutrition Program for the division of digestive diseases at UCLA. I was a reviewer for the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) patient initiative for Short Bowel Syndrome and Low FODMAP Diet. I am a member of the Low FODMAP Diet Advisory Board for Monash University. I am proud to practice as a UCLA Urban Zen Integrative Therapist.

Q: How did you initially find Orgain and what specifically prompted you to begin using with/recommending to you patients?
A: Discovered it at a nutrition conference, was impressed with the taste and high quality ingredients; liked having alternative options besides the mainstream meal replacement drinks to offer patients. Started to use with patients who need to gain weight and have motility issues and for those who could not prepare their own shakes at home.

Q: What is your personal favorite Orgain product and flavor and why?
A: Vanilla All in One Nutritional shake – creamy smooth texture, not overly sweet.

Q: How are you currently using Orgain in your practice?
A: Weight gain for motility disorders, especially gastroparesis and scleroderma.

Q: Please share a personal story about your experience with Orgain and how it has been beneficial with one or more of your patients.
A: I have a 27 year old patient with scleroderma, gastroparesis and weight loss. Orgain is the only supplement she tolerates (and enjoys drinking) and she is now solidly in the healthy weight BMI category!

Less than 100 years ago, the food our ancestors ate was grown in their own gardens
or on neighboring farms. Terms like “clean”, “real”, and “organic” food weren’t used,
because food was just that: clean, real, and organic. While eating an organic diet is
a matter of personal preference, we believe such a diet makes a distinctly positive
difference in one’s health. The term organic refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed, and it includes strict rules governing production, processing, distribution and sales in order to ensure that these products maintain the organic integrity that begins on the farm. These standards also provide verification and traceability from the farm to the consumer.

Orgain products are growing in popularity among our patients! One of my patients enjoys making homemade shakes and smoothies, and uses Orgain’s Organic Protein Plant Based Powder – the patient told me that the Vanilla Bean flavor is “very delicious”. I have another two patients who are lactose intolerant and afraid to drink even lactose reduced supplement options, so they were appreciative to try the Vegan All-In-One Shakes. Both of these patients tried and tolerated the Vegan All-In-One Shakes well, and continue to use these supplemental drinks for additional calories and protein during the day. –Jennifer, Oncology Dietitian
